Summer Cookouts
Summer officially kicked off on June 21! If you will be going to cookouts or potlucks this season, don't be lax about food allergy management.

If you are allergic to fish or shellfish, beware of the grill, which may have been used previously to cook these foods. Also be on guard for ingredient surprises; some burgers (both meat-containing and vegan) may contain peanut and/or tree nuts as fillers, and we've seen a brand of bottled barbeque sauce that contains tree nuts. Finally, beware of shared serving utensils on the buffet, which could cause cross-contact between food that contains an allergen and food that does not.

Ask questions, read labels, don't let your guard down, and enjoy the season with friends and family!

Students with Food Allergies: How the Laws Can Help
We've recently updated our booklet, Students with Food Allergies: How the Laws Can Help. This publication provides an overview of the most significant federal laws related to students with food allergies in school, such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The booklet also offers advice and guidance for parents on how to develop a food allergy management plan for their child at school.

Don't Forget to Read the Label!
As you enjoy the warmer weather that summer brings, don't forget to read labels carefully for sunscreens, lotions, and insect sprays to be sure that they do not contain any food allergens. If you have questions about the ingredients you should avoid, ask your doctor.
